Debra E. James


Debra Egli James is a trial lawyer with a broad range of experience in litigation involving commercial, business and employment disputes, professional malpractice, tort defense, insurance coverage disputes, agricultural law issues, automobile liability, personal injury and complex litigation in both state and federal courts. She has successfully tried dozens of cases to a verdict.


Ms. James graduated with honors from Iowa State University in 1981 and Drake University Law School in 1984 and served as a judicial law clerk to Iowa Supreme Court Justice Jerry L. Larson. She is a member and past President of the Saline-Ottawa County Bar Association and is licensed to practice law in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. James belongs to the Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska Bar Associations and the American Bar Association and is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of Kansas, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.


In 1997, James was appointed by the Kansas Supreme Court to the Kansas Board of Discipline for Attorneys and has been a member of the Professional Ethics and Grievance Committee of the Kansas Bar Association since 1996. In 2002, Deb was appointed by Kansas Senators Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback to the Federal Judicial Nominating Task Force and, in 2003, became a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel. She serves on the Kansas Bar Association’s Fee Dispute Resolution Committee, the Kansas Bar Association Membership Committee and is a member of the Defense Research Institute. For six years, she served as a member of the KBA’s Board of Governors and the Board of Governors of the Kansas Association of Defense Counsel. Deb is a Past President of the Kansas Bar Association Litigation Section and is listed in the Best Lawyers in America and in Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyers. Ms. James was also selected by the National Trial Lawyers Association as a Kansas Top 100 Trial Lawyer and is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.


Additionally, James is active in her community and has served two terms as President of the Board of Directors of the Salina Area YWCA and two terms as President of the Board of Directors of the Great Plains Theater Festival in Abilene, Kansas.


James has two children: Alex and Allison. Deb is a frequent CLE lecturer and has presented to numerous groups, including the Kansas Claims Association, the Kansas Association of County Counselors, the Kansas Association of Defense Counsel, the Kansas Women Attorneys Association, the Kansas Bar Association and the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association, among others.
